Baggage Information

Porter Airlines permits its passengers to carry personal effects and such items as may be required by the passenger during his/her travel or at his/her destination. Passengers may carry such items with him/her on board the aircraft or may hand them over to Porter agents at the check-in counter for safe custody and carriage to his/her destination.

Please note that additional baggage restrictions may be imposed at the airport without prior notice.

Baggage Limits:

Porter Airlines Inc. has imposed limits on passenger carry-on baggage based on the volume and weight limitations of the approved stowage aboard its aircraft.

Carry-on:

Each passenger is permitted one standard article measuring no more than 55 x 40 x 23 cm (22 x 16 x 10 inches) plus one personal article measuring no more than 33 x 43 x 16 cm (13 x 17 x 6 inches). Each such item can weigh no more than 9 kg (20 lbs).

The following items are not counted as carry-on: cameras, coats, purses smaller than (10 x 12 x 8 inches), receptacles containing human remains, strollers, child restraint systems, containers carrying life-sustaining items, crutches, canes, walkers and other similar items.

While onboard, lighter pieces of carry-on baggage should be stowed in overhead bins while heavier baggage must be placed on the floor under passenger seats. Porter may require that an item of carry-on baggage travel as checked baggage if the item cannot be safely stowed in the cabin.

Checked Baggage:

A total of two (2) pieces of baggage for a combined weight of 23 kg (50 lbs) is accepted free of charge for each passenger. The weight of baggage is combinable for passengers booked on the same itinerary. No single piece may weigh more than 32 kg (70 lbs).

The maximum size allowed is 158 cm (62 in) total dimension (the sum of length, width and height). The only exceptions to the volume limit are skis and hockey equipment.

Excess Baggage Charges:

Any excess weight (above 23 kg/50 lbs) will be charged at a rate of $5 (Cad) per kg.

An extra baggage charge will be collected for any baggage in excess of the 2 pieces allowed. The fee applied is $25 (Cad) per additional bag.

Fragile Items:

Porter Airlines will accept any fragile/perishable/improperly packed boxes solely at the passenger’s responsibility and will not be liable for any damage to such items. All passengers presenting such items as checked baggage will be advised accordingly and a Limited Release Tag (LRT) must be signed. Examples of such articles include but are not limited to:

  • Fragile items: glassware, crockery, paintings, china, electronic items
  • Perishable items: food items such as ice cream, seafood, fruits, flowers
  • Improperly packed items: overstuffed suitcases, cardboard boxes or cartons, gunny bags, cloth bags

GatePorter Service:

GatePorter is a unique service offered to Porter passengers. It offers the option of allowing passengers to place their carry-on baggage on a cart located at the base of the aircraft stairs or at the end of the bridge prior to boarding. Upon arrival, this baggage will be returned to the cart or bridge for passengers to pick up at their destination. GatePorter is not intended for excess or oversized baggage.

Hazardous Materials:

All items classified as hazardous materials are forbidden from carriage on all Porter Airline’s flights.  These materials include, but are not limited to, flammable gases (liquid and solid), non-flammable gases, compressed gases, explosives, toxic or infectious substances, corrosives, oxidizing agents, radioactive material, and magnetized material.

Liability:

Liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is limited to $1000 (Cad) per passenger.

Please note that Porter Airlines Inc assumes no liability for money, jewelry, silverware, negotiable papers, securities or other valuables, business documents, samples, liquids, food and other perishables, computers, prescription drugs, photographic equipment, video equipment, cellular telephones, artistic items, chinaware/ceramics/pottery, electronic and mechanical items, glass, musical instruments and equipment, paper (includes photographs/negatives/prints, historical documents, maps), sporting goods (tennis rackets, scuba gear, fishing rods, surfboards, sporting trophies such as animal antlers and horns).

Porter is not responsible for the following: nicks, scratches, missing pullstraps, zipper damage, scuff marks, damage to wheels, soiling, manufacturing defects, and damage resulting from over-packing or spillage of packed items.

Packing Requirements:

When transporting fragile items or electronic equipment, ensure the safe packaging with adequate cushioning material to prevent any breakage. Porter Airlines assumes no liability for (but not limited to) fragile, valuable, or perishable articles including money, jewelry, cameras, video and electronic equipment, silverware, negotiable instruments, business documents, samples, antiques, paintings, furs, manuscripts, or similar items.

Ensure that each piece of baggage is clearly marked with the passenger’s name, address and phone number. The passenger should include a copy of this information inside their baggage as well. Remove or close securely all loose handles, hooks and straps.

Ensure there are no sharp objects like scissors in carry-on baggage. They should be transferred to the checked baggage instead.

Ensure that electronic devices such as cell phones, laptop computers, and portable or electronic games are charged and ready to be turned on for inspection.

Pack prescription medication in its original labeled container. Syringes or needles for personal medical use must have the needle guard in place and also be accompanied by the medication in its original labeled container.

Be aware that any substances capable of posing risks to health, safety, property or the environment when transported, such as cleaning solvents, aerosols or other common items, are not permitted on board the aircraft.

Please remember:

No free baggage allowance is granted to infants; however napkins, feeding bottles and sufficient food for the journey may be carried free provided the total weight of such articles does not exceed 9 kg (20 lbs). If this amount is exceeded, the excess weight is treated as part of the allowance of the accompanying adult passenger.

All camera film should be transported in carry-on baggage, as new screening machines for checked baggage may affect film. Film below ISO 800 will not be harmed by carry-on screening machines.

We accept properly packed musical instruments for carriage as checked baggage, subject to all excess fees (overweight, oversized, extra item) if applicable. Seats can not be purchased for musical instruments. Small musical instruments may be permitted as part of the carry-on baggage allowance.

In accordance with Federal Law, a passenger who presents baggage containing a firearm must sign a declaration that the firearm is unloaded and placed in a suitable locked container before such baggage will be checked.

Items that are not permitted in carry-on baggage aboard the aircraft are those that present a potential hazard.  They include:

  • Weapons such as revolvers, guns, rifles, ammunition
  • Chemicals or gases that are disabling (pepper spray, mace, tear gas)
  • Cutting and puncturing devices (knives, box cutters, straight razors, razor blades (not in cartridges), scissors, corkscrews with attached knives)
