Get back to nature, when you fly from Toronto to Stephenville.
Located on Newfoundland’s west coast, Stephenville sits by St. George's Bay. This scenic locale is situated near the ocean, mountains, lakes, forests, and rivers. Stephenville’s dramatic landscapes make it a destination for outdoor adventures.
Use Stephenville as your starting point to get to Barachois Pond Provincial Park and Gros Morne National Park. In both parks, you can trek the northmost end of the Appalachian Mountain chain, along the Long Range Mountains. For easier trekking, Stephenville has a network of hiking trails just minutes from downtown.
If you stay in town, the Stephenville Theatre Festival lights up the summers. Closer to the shore, the Harmon Seaside Links offers golf with an ocean view. Whatever you choose, Stephenville is sure to charm any visitor from Toronto.
Well worth the 1 hour and 45-minute drive from Stephenville, Gros Morne is a must-see for any Toronto traveller.
Gros Morne National Park contains a variety of landscapes within its 1,805 square kilometre area. This UNESCO World Heritage site features fjords, forests, beaches, bogs, and mountains.
The Gros Morne Mountain stands at 806 metres, though its peak is usually hidden in fog or snow. Gros Morne’s unique ecosystem allows you to experience the climate of the arctic tundra, without having to travel to the far north. Keep an eye open for the woodland caribou and arctic hare that make their homes along the mountain.
Spectacular hiking trails are available throughout the park. The Tablelands trail is an easy trek to the stark peaks of Winterhouse Brook Canyon. More experienced hikers will enjoy the Snug Harbour trail and its views of the 650-metre cliffs of Western Brook Pond Gorge.
While Gros Morne features a variety of campgrounds, there’s no need to panic if you can’t pitch a tent. Rocky Harbour, Cow Head and other nearby villages have hotels available, to keep you well rested during your trip from Toronto to Stephenville.
With a 30-minute drive from Stephenville, you’ll arrive in the spectacular Barachois Pond Provincial Park.
Just off the Trans Canada Highway, this provincial park is a convenient and popular escape. With freshwater lakes for swimming, trails for hiking, and mountains for climbing, you’ll be busy in Barachois Pond.
Part of the Long Range Mountains, the park offers the opportunity to hike the northmost part of the Appalachian chain. A trek along this trail leads to great views of the park, as well as bragging rights to bring back to Toronto.
Another scenic route to take in the park is the Erin Mountain trail. The lower part of this trail provides a leisurely stroll along a boardwalk, with lookouts over Barachois Pond. For something more challenging, climb 304 metres to the upper part to see views of St. George’s Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
With 150 campsites, Barachois Pond Provincial Park is perfect for an overnight visit. Stay the night in one of these beautiful sites and you’re likely to stay up all night looking at the stars. You’ll remember the Newfoundland night sky long after you return to Toronto from Stephenville.
