As soon as your Porter flight to Saint John touches down, fast forward to Reversing Falls. This rare geologic wonder is sure to impress all.
The rapids at Reversing Falls change their direction and result in three different tides: low, slack and high.
At low tide, the river empties into the bay causing a series of rapids and whirlpools. As the tides rise back up, the river current begins to slow; this is called a slack tide. It’s only at this time that the river becomes calm. The Bay’s tides continue to rise and reverse the flow of the river, and rapids form again, peaking at high tide. This entire cycle can take up to 12.5 hours.
To truly appreciate this phenomenon, it is recommended to visit just before the end of low tide. During that time, the falls are vigorously rushing through – a sight that is highly recommend by all.
Make sure you visit the Information Centre at Reversing Falls to learn about the geologic wonders that give rise to these currents.
If you want a closer look, take a sightseeing boat tour that runs through the calm portions of the tide. Relax and admire the beautiful scenery of Saint John on both sides of the boat.
For those that have the need for speed, opt for the jet boat tour and speed through the rapids. This ride is fully equipped with sharp turns and high speeds – make sure you bring an extra pair of clothes, you will get wet on this ride.
If you prefer to travel by foot instead of water, drive to the city’s southern end and walk along the Bay of Fundy. This beautiful hike is full of coastline, beach and wildlife. Take in the beauty from the towering cliffs and get a different perspective of the Reversing Falls.
