Famous sites at every turn

When you’re looking for things to do in New York, you never have to look far. With landmarks like the Rockefeller Centre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Times Square scattered throughout the city, you’re never more than a few blocks away from your next stop.

After your flight from Montréal touches down, watch the New York Giants score a touchdown at MetLife Stadium. To really see New York stand up and cheer, catch the Yankees play ball at Yankee stadium. Hockey fans will want to head to Madison Square Garden to see the Rangers take to the ice.

Madison Square Garden is also home to some of New York’s best entertainment. Concerts and stand-up performances from the biggest names in music and comedy make this venue famous. For more live entertainment, Broadway is the way to go. Manhattan’s theatre district stages productions that draw actors and audiences from all over the world.

When you’re looking for places to eat in New York, you can’t go wrong with pizza. Lombardi’s has been serving up slices since 1905, making it the oldest pizzeria in New York. Similarly historical, Totonno’s is a Coney Island institution, where the classic Margherita pizza has been making mouths water since 1924.

Once you’re full, work off your slice (or two) with a walk through Central Park. New York’s urban oasis spans 843 acres, right in the middle of Manhattan. With ponds, meadows, and a zoo, you might want to spend a whole afternoon wandering through this expansive green space. Even if you only have a half hour to spare, Central Park is a must-see stop on your trip from Montréal to New York.

Prospect Heights

The height of Brooklyn

More than just a hipster haven, Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights is the next destination after your flight from Montréal to New York.

Start your day right with breakfast at one of Prospect Heights’ restaurants. With pancakes aplenty, Tom’s Restaurant will wake up even the most reluctant morning people. While it shares its name with the restaurant from Seinfeld, Tom’s in Prospect Heights’  predates the other location by several years. Opened in 1936, Tom’s Restaurant still has the same vintage soda pops on tap.

Once your bacon and egg breakfast has settled, take a walk to Prospect Park. Enter through the Grand Army Plaza gates to start your visit off with a photo-op under the towering granite archway and bronze statues.

In Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum and Public Library offer hours of indoor entertainment. If you’re looking to spend some time outside, head to the nearby Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. The Japanese Hill and Pond Garden provides a quiet retreat from some of the park’s busier paths.

Further south, the Prospect Park Audubon Centre in the historic Boathouse building hosts events. You’ll learn more about the park’s ecosystem and can even pick up supplies like binoculars and magnifying glasses to help you explore Prospect Park. Start your travels in The Ravine, Brooklyn’s only forest, to see the park’s most interesting plants and animals.

For more exotic animals, head to the Prospect Park Zoo. Everything from red pandas to porcupines make their homes in this extensive and informative zoo.

When you’re ready to leave, use Prospect Park’s central Brooklyn location to visit more of this borough’s neighbourhoods. If you’re hungry, Windsor Terrace serves up the best Caribbean food in Brooklyn. Nearby Park Slope’s historic, tree-lined streets are perfect for a post-lunch stroll. Wherever you go next, another amazing neighbourhood awaits.

If you don’t manage to see it all, you’ll have the perfect excuse for another trip from Montréal to New York.

× Close DUMBO

DUMBO

Brooklyn’s bright idea

When you fly from Montréal to New York, make sure to see one of Brooklyn’s coolest neighbourhoods, DUMBO.

DUMBO’s strange name is actually an acronym; it stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. To get under the overpass, take the East River Ferry across, or walk along the historic Brooklyn Bridge.

The best place to start in this bustling neighbourhood is by the water. DUMBO’s history is still visible in the waterfront warehouses that line the shores. At Brooklyn Bridge Park, the industrial area has been transformed into a green space, with one of the best views of Manhattan. Rolling green lawns and park benches create a scenic lookout over the East River. Put a new spin on the view with a ride on Jane’s Carousel, a painstakingly restored 1922 carousel.

Just west of Jane’s Carousel, you’ll find The River. Not only is this upscale location one of the best restaurants in DUMBO, it’s also consistently rated as one of the best restaurants in New York. With a classic menu and a strict dress code, The River makes for a deliciously luxurious dining experience.

For more of the best places to eat in DUMBO, look to the area’s warehouses. Many of these industrial spaces have been converted into restaurants, serving everything from organic Italian food to modern French fare.

Like DUMBO’s food scene, the neighbourhood’s art scene makes the most of the warehouse space. St. Ann’s Warehouse stages theatre productions in what was once a spice processing factory. If that doesn’t spice up your evening, visit one of the exhibitions or events at the all-female collective, AIR Gallery.

One of the biggest benefits of DUMBO’s thriving art scene is the amazing artisanal goods available in the area’s boutiques. Peruse through handmade crafts and pick up a souvenir to bring back to Montréal.
