Where there once stood a working class neighbourhood, you’ll now find one of Québec City’s coolest areas. Former factories and warehouses now produce trendy fare and fashionable clothing. Along rue Saint-Joseph, you’ll find a snapshot of Saint-Roch’s transformation.
As Saint-Roch’s main road, rue Saint-Joseph carries a representative collection of restaurants and bars. Eat in art galleries or cozy up in classic pubs. Ambience is always on the menu, and Saint-Roch being in Québec City, so is poutine.
Burn off the calories with a walk along the Saint Charles River. This quiet river is a peaceful way to spend the afternoon during a busy trip from Boston. Find the historic roots of Saint-Roch at Québec City’s largest church, Saint-Roch Church. Standing 46 metres high, this towering church dates back to 1923. After the destruction of the Saint-Roch mall in 1974, the church regained its place as one of the most prominent features in the neighbourhood’s skyline.
After seeing Saint-Roch, stop off at the Gare du Palais. This beautiful train station can take you by train or bus to wherever your trip from Boston is headed next in Québec City.

Overlooking the St. Lawrence River, Haute-Ville was strategically chosen for its scenic view. You can see the remnants of this military past in the Citadelle de Québec and the Parc Historique de l’Artillerie. Whether you’re watching the changing of the guard or admiring the grand fortifications which once served to protect the city, Québec City’s military history stands on guard throughout the Upper Town.
In Place d’Armes, the main square of the Upper Town, entertainers and performers turn the city streets into a carnival. Past the performers, the rue des Trésors puts on an equally impressive show. Lined with artworks and artists, this street is the best spot to pick up a painting or print to bring back to Boston.
After finding a treasure along the rue des Trésors, take a stroll along Terrasse Dufferin. This wide walkway will take you right to the most photographed hotel in the world, the Château Frontenac. Keep the Château’s world record in place with a photo of this beautiful hotel.
