Unique history and waterfront relaxation

Fly from Boston to Sault Ste. Marie to see a city characterized by waterfront tranquillity, provincial parks, and easy access to other wonders of the Canadian wilderness.

Some of the best Sault Ste. Marie attractions can be found outdoors. The Sault Ste. Marie Canal, completed in 1895, passes between Sault Ste. Marie and Whitefish Island, and is surrounded by historic buildings. Originally a part of the shipping route from the Atlantic to Lake Superior, the canal is now a great place for a relaxing waterside stroll.

For more walks by the water, head to the walkway along St. Marys River in downtown Sault Ste. Marie. Join in on the recreation on paved paths with local cyclists and joggers. Orr simply sit back, relax, and watch the boats pass by on the waters of St. Marys River.

At the end of your walk, you can spend some time roaming the halls of the Algoma Art Gallery, which has been devoted to local visual arts since 1975. Permanent collections and temporary exhibits boast thousands of artworks including sculptures, paintings, and installations.

Learn more about the region at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, where explorers of all ages will take off with some new knowledge. Housed in a historic airplane hangar, this museum features over 30 aircraft, multiple hands-on exhibits, and a flight simulator.

If you want to fly even higher, you can soar above the Soo (the city’s local and endearing nickname) with one of its popular helicopter tours.

Before you fly back to Boston from Sault Ste. Marie, go a little farther north on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, an absolute must for first-time visitors. Waterfalls, along with stunning views of the majestic northern lakes, and the canyon itself are not to be missed.

Lake Superior Provincial Park

Take a hike with superior views

When you fly from Boston to Sault Ste. Marie, a scenic drive about two hours from the city leads to one of the largest provincial parks in Ontario. Lake Superior Provincial Park sits along the shores of the largest lake in the world.

Lake Superior Provincial Park is full of natural beauty. Come to this expansive green space for picnic areas, canoe routes, and hiking trails. Along your excursions, you’ll spot lakes, river valleys, towering cliffs, and waterfalls. During the summer, jump into the park’s inland lakes and shallow bays.

Back on the mainland, you can have just as much fun trekking through the park’s 11 hiking trails. From amateur to expert, there are options for hikers of all levels on paths that run along beaches, rocky shores, near wetlands, through boreal forests, and floating boardwalks.

More advanced hikers won’t want to miss the Agawa Rock Pictographs. A short and moderately difficult trail leads to Ojibwe pictographs that can be viewed from the rock ledge when lake conditions are calm enough.

Near the south end of the park, let the views of Lake Superior take your breath away as you inhale the fragrant and fresh air of the pine forests of Agawa Bay. Around this area, you can also learn more about Lake Superior’s effects on the region’s landscape and cultural history at the Visitor Centre.

Lake Superior Provincial Park is famous for its wide range of hiking trails and canoe routes. Keep an eye out for beavers, otters, great blue herons, and moose as you paddle along historical routes and logging roads.

Lake Superior Provincial Park features a collection of canoe routes of varying difficulty with campground access points along the way. Try your hand at trout fishing, paddle around obstacles, or take some scenic routes that were once travelled by loggers and fur traders centuries ago.

Fly from Boston to Sault Ste. Marie for easy access to the picturesque natural wonders of Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Whitefish Island

Flights from Boston to Sault Ste. Marie transport you to a peaceful Northern region where interesting pieces of Canada’s past still exist. Whitefish Island is just minutes from downtown Sault Ste. Marie and offers great opportunities to immerse yourself in Aboriginal history.

For thousands of years, the island was a meeting place for the Anishinaabe people and a bustling hub for fishing and trading. Today, this protected land can be easily accessed by various bridges from downtown Sault Ste. Marie.

Whitefish Island remains a site for Aboriginal ceremonies, most notably occasional fireworks displays. The island offers a small slice of tranquillity on St Marys River. You can hike, bike, or kayak your way around the area.

In addition to cultural history, you’re sure to spot some wildlife during your wanderings. Beavers, muskrats, eagles, owls, and more call Whitefish Island home. The island officially becomes a national historic site in 1981 and is now maintained by the Batchewana Band. A visit to this peaceful spot is a true north treat for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and photographers.

After a long day of outdoor exploration, head back to the mainland for some old-fashioned Italian fare at Giovanni’s Restaurant. A favourite of Saultites and tourists alike, this eatery is loved for its delicious pasta and friendly service.
