L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site
When you fly from Halifax to Deer Lake, make sure to set aside time for L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. As one of Newfoundland's top attractions, L'Anse aux Meadows is home to archaeological remains of an 11th-century Viking settlement – the first known European settlement in North America! From Deer Lake, drive along the Viking Trail (Route 430) to get here.
In 1960, Helge Ingstad and Anne Stine Ingstad discovered this site on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland. For the next eight years, the archaeologists led an international team in the excavation of the site. Some of the many artifacts they unearthed include a stone oil lamp, iron boat nails and a small spindle whorl.
Head to the visitor centre to see some of these original artifacts and a 3D model of what the Norse camp would have looked like a thousand years ago. Guided tours also depart from the visitor centre throughout the day – take part in one to learn more about the history of L'Anse aux Meadows and the site's archaeological excavations.
Meet re-enactors at the Viking Encampment. You'll learn how the Vikings lived and worked through conversations with a blacksmith, weaver, navigator-adventurer, and other members of the crew.
