Famous sites at every turn

See all that New York City has to offer when you fly from Halifax to New York.

Start your day in New York with a walk in Central Park, the renowned green space in the heart of Manhattan. Wander down scenic paths like the elm-shaded Mall to hidden gems within the greenery. End your day with a nostalgic ride on the Central Park Carousel.

Bordering Central Park along the bustling Fifth Avenue is the Museum Mile. Spend an afternoon hopping through the nine museums along the street. There, you can roam through the exhibits of fine art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Solomon Guggenheim Museum.

Why not visit one of the lesser-known museums for a look at New York’s diverse communities. You’ll discover Latin American heritage at El Museo del Barrio and an archive of 4,000 years of history at the Jewish Museum.

You’ll find the the Lincoln Center close-by Central Park at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Broadway. At the performance arts venue, catch a lively concert from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Also gracing the stage is the illustrious New York City Ballet.

You can follow Broadway to the energetic hub of Times Square. The area is plastered with brightly lit billboards that ring true to New York’s reputation as, “The city that never sleeps”. You’ll also find some interesting places to eat in New York near Times Square.

A few blocks away on 46th Street is Restaurant Row. Among the eclectic collection of fine dining establishments, you’ll uncover Barbetta. Taste the flavours of Italy’s Piedmont region in their sumptuous cuisine. You can even trace the lineage of Barbetta’s dishes to the restaurant’s opening in 1906; the menu lists every new dish and the year it was first served.

Coney Island

Sunshine and amusement parks

Book a flight from Halifax to New York for fun in the sun at Coney Island.

The dazzling neighbourhood is nestled on the southern tip of Brooklyn. Renowned for its beaches and amusement parks, Coney Island is a festive locale with some of the best things to do in New York.

During the early 1900’s, the area emerged to become one of America’s most visited destinations. The legendary Luna Park, Dreamland, and Steeplechase Park set the tone for Coney Island’s amusement park era.

While many of these venues have disappeared, still standing are thrilling rides like the Coney Island Cyclone. Blast off on this rocket themed roller coaster at Coney Island’s most recent incarnation of Luna Park. Grab a bite after the zigzagging ride at one of the area’s legendary eateries.

Stop-by Nathan’s Famous for one of their infamous hot dogs. The restaurant has been a Coney Island staple since 1916. It also hosts the equally famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, where you’ll quite frankly, marvel at the competitor's’ ability to gobble down hot dogs.

While many of Coney Island’s attractions are seasonal, the New York Aquarium remains open year-round. Peruse the tanks filled with exotic fish and marine mammals. Grab a seat at the Aquatheater for the entertaining antics of the sea lions.

A visit to the New York Aquarium may even make you eager for a dip in the ocean. Dive into the calm waters at Coney Island Beach. Dry off on a stroll along the Coney Island Boardwalk all the way to Brighton Beach.

Gramercy Park

In the lap of luxury

Revel in the decadent history and exhilarating entertainment of Gramercy Park after your flight from Halifax to New York.

For more than a century, Gramercy Park has remained one of New York City’s most exclusive neighbourhoods. The area moved from being a historic haven for the rich and famous to a tightly knit community of contemporary creatives. A few New York points of interest are tucked away on the relatively quiet streets of the neighbourhood.

The mostly residential area is also home to an array of hip bars and trendy restaurants. Find a table, menu, and cozy view of the neighbourhood on the busy thoroughfare of Irving Place. The corridor stretches for five blocks along Lexington Avenue within Gramercy Park.

Within this laid back locale, you’ll find a green space also named Gramercy Park. Unfortunately, you can only peep through the black wrought-iron fences into this private little oasis. The more than 300 keys that unlock its gates are restricted to residents in the surrounding 19th century brownstones and row houses.

Private social clubs from the early 1900’s remain neighbourhood mainstays. The Players Club began as a gathering of celebrated actors that grew to include wealthy patrons of the arts. Take a stroll past the brown brick façade of the mansion, but unfortunately you can’t get in without an invitation.

You can, however, step through the doors of other iconic landmarks in Gramercy Park. Check out an Off Broadway production at the Vineyard Theatre. Electrifying rock concerts and memorable hip hop performances are all part of the program at Irving Plaza.

Mark your calendar for a good time in Gramercy Park when you fly from Halifax to New York.
