For about 10 cents a year, the city rents this park’s space from the British government. With Halifax’s lease on the land lasting until 2865, the park isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
One of the most prominent marks of the park’s British heritage is the Prince of Wales Tower. This circular Martello tower dates back to 1796, making it the oldest of its kind in North America. The tower’s two centuries of history are explored in interpretive panels around the structure.
