The sea and the city

Discover a Maritime metropolis when you book flights from Montréal to Halifax.

From landmarks, to entertainment, to parkland, there’s a history to all of the best things to do in Halifax. Wherever you head in this eastern Canadian city, you’ll find that the past is part of the present when you fly from Montréal to Halifax.

When your flight from Montréal to Halifax lands, start your journey with a climb to the top of Citadel Hill to see the height of Halifax’s history. This towering hill, where the Halifax Citadel is located, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The view of the harbour is scenic, but this spot was chosen for strategic purposes in 1749, to keep watch over Halifax’s waters.

To see the best of this seaside city’s entertainment, step down from Citadel Hill and head to the Neptune Theatre. The site of live theatre since 1915, the Neptune Theatre has undergone a series of renovations and reincarnations over its century-long life, being given several other names before finally settling on Neptune.

Take in more of the city’s history in the form of a pint at the Alexander Keith's Brewery. With tours of the facility where the beer is made, you’ll get a first-hand taste of what this Atlantic city is brewing.

Visit the city’s collective garden, with a walk through the Halifax Common. Black wrought-iron features frame the colourful flower displays in this Victorian-designed green space.

If you’re looking for a quiet night, cozy up with your favourite book in the Halifax Public Library. Designed as a public living room for the city, this library also hosts music and theatre performances.

Before heading back to Montréal, make sure to snap a photo with the colourful houses of the North End. Capture the maritime charm of the city with these candy-coloured homes. It’s the perfect memory to capture your seaside trip when you fly from Montréal to Halifax.

Long Lake Provincial Park

A short trip to Long Lake

Only minutes away from downtown, visit Long Lake Provincial Park for endless outdoor fun when you book flights from Montréal to Halifax.

When your flight from Montréal to Halifax lands, stretch your legs along the park’s extensive trail network through Nova Scotia’s nature. The lake may be long, but you’ll easily find your way around it on the park’s pathways which can be covered by bikes.

Take the Lakeview Trail to travel around Long Lake’s smaller body of water. You’ll see Witherod Lake from every angle along this trail. A stroll along this scenic shoreline is the perfect way to take in the area’s natural beauty.

Away from the park’s beaten paths, 2,000 hectares of protected deciduous and mixed forests are waiting to be discovered. At five times the size of New York’s Central Park, there’s endless sights to to see in Long Lake Provincial Park. The terrain can be rough, but the shots you’ll get in this popular photography spot make the trek more than worth it when you fly from Montréal to Halifax.

Explore the park’s waterways by kayak or canoe, paddle your way back to the path, or park your boat on the beach and immerse yourself in Long Lake’s amazing swimming. When the weather’s hot, there’s no cooler place to be than by the water.

The park is so big that you won’t be able to see it all in one day. Luckily, with a 15-minute drive from downtown, it’s as easy to come back as it is to get there when you book flights from Montréal to Halifax.

Point Pleasant Park

Scenic and historic

When you book flights from Montréal to Halifax, head to Point Pleasant Park to look out over the Atlantic and back into history.

When your flight from Montréal to Halifax lands, visiting one of the city’s parks is a great way to spend a day. However, this 75-hectare park technically doesn’t belong to Halifax. For about 10 cents a year, the city rents this park’s space from the British government. With Halifax’s lease on the land lasting until 2865, the park isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

One of the most prominent marks of the park’s British heritage is the Prince of Wales Tower. This circular Martello tower dates back to 1796, making it the oldest of its kind in North America. The tower’s two centuries of history are explored in interpretive panels around the structure. It’s strange, squat architecture, solid walls, and strategic purpose is all explained in these educational write-ups.

The Prince of Wales Tower didn’t stand alone. Take in more history with flights from Montréal to Halifax by discovering more ruins of forts that stood throughout the park. Although they’re less preserved than the Prince of Wales Tower, the 39 km of winding, easily walkable trails will take you by these remnants of Halifax’s military past.

Point Pleasant Park’s beaches get you closer to the sea that the fort’s soldiers guarded. To see where pirates once hung around, visit Black Rock Beach, now a favourite beachside location. Black Rock’s dark past has been replaced by a sunny outlook on this supervised beach, making it the perfect spot for a fun afternoon with the family.

After walking through history and wading into the Atlantic ocean, you’re only a 10-minute drive away from downtown Halifax. You can easily enjoy both sides of this seaside city when you book flights from Montréal to Halifax and head to Point Pleasant Park.
