Welcome to nature’s hotspot

Find so many things to do in the Soo when you book flights from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie.

Whether you’re watching the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds hit the ice at the GFL Memorial Gardens, or fishing in the waters around Whitefish Island, this northern Ontario city has you covered for every time of year.

When your flight from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie lands, take to the Soo’s superior outdoors by visiting Pancake Bay Provincial Park and Lake Superior Provincial Park. Both with plenty of trails to explore, you’ll see the natural wonders that the city is known for. For outdoor activities in the winter, try cross-country skiing at Stokely Creek Lodge to lighten up even the coldest days.

When it’s a winter wonderland, try tobogganing down Finn Hill. Dash through the snow on this extension of the John Rowswell Hub Trail. Join the Hub Club with a walk along this 25 km trail around Sault Ste. Marie. At the Downtown Waterfront section, you can stroll along the Sault Ste. Marie Boardwalk, and look out over the St. Marys River.

The tumultuous waters of the St. Marys River have been tamed by the Sault Ste. Marie Canal. A boat tour through the Soo Locks will have its ups and downs, but a journey through these monumental waterworks always ends on a high note. Watch your boat bob up over 6 metres, as you pass through the enormous U.S. Locks and the historic Canadian Locks.

Get an artistic lay of the land at the Art Gallery of Algoma, where Ontario’s natural beauty is in the spotlight. After your fill of art, learn more about the city with a visit to the Sault Ste. Marie Museum.

Art, outdoor fun, and picturesque landscapes are yours to explore when you book flights from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie.

Pancake Bay Provincial Park

The flipside of Ontario’s outdoors

Visit Pancake Bay Provincial Park for a sweet trip when you book flights from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie.

Soft, fine sand stretches for 3 km over Pancake Bay’s beaches. This powdery beach slopes into bright blue waters, more reminiscent of the Caribbean than Canada.

With flights from Montréal to Sault Ste Marie, you can canoe through the calm waters of Batchawana Bay, or take on the challenge of Lake Superior’s often choppy waters. Paddle through the historic paths taken by the Voyageurs. These fur trade routes follow a formative era in Canada’s history, making the scenic waterways a piece of the past.

Beneath the waves lurks a dark history. In 1975, a violent storm sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald. This ship is one of many to be found in the “graveyard of the Great Lakes”. From the surface, you can still see some of these wrecks.

For a better view of the graveyard, follow the 14 km Lookout Trail. You can take this trail on two feet or two wheels, but cyclists should be cautious as it can be a bumpy ride on this rough backcountry path. Lined with yellow birch and sugar maple, the trail itself is as beautiful as its lookouts. Views of Pancake Bay and Lake Superior reward those who tackle this trail.

If you’re looking to settle in for the night, make a home out of one of Pancake Bay Provincial Park’s yurts. Outfitted with wood floors and outdoor fire pits, the yurts are far from roughing it.

For an experience closer to nature, stake your tent at one of Pancake Bay’s many campsites and rest up for the next adventure when you book flights from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie.

Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site of Canada

Where history stands at attention

When your flight from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie lands, drive 1 hour and 20 minutes to go 200 years into the past at Fort St. Joseph.

Once called the “military Siberia of Upper Canada”, Fort St. Joseph’s history came to a head in the War of 1812. The most westerly of Upper Canada’s forts, Fort St. Joseph was used to protect Canadian fur trading during these tough times.

When you fly from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie, you can walk among the remains of this once thriving community of fur traders, first nations peoples, and soldiers. Ghostly limestone ruins reveal the shape of the fort in its heyday.

Head to the St. Joseph Island Museum to learn more about the area and its inhabitants. Among the 7,000 artifacts, you’ll find relics from the fort, farm equipment, and a wreath woven from real human hair. Pack a camera on your flight from Montréal to Sault Ste Marie to snap some photos of these interesting artifacts.

As you hike along the historic Rains Point and Cemetery trails, you’ll pass the marshes and maples that surround this national historic site of Canada. Beavers and moose make their homes around St. Joseph Island, but it’s the area’s winged wildlife that takes outdoor activities to new heights.

Birds of a feather flock to St. Joseph Island, creating ideal conditions for birdwatchers. With wetlands nearby, shorebirds and waterfowl are always in the air around the fort. Keep binoculars handy to spot the birds that live on St. Joseph Island. Avian enthusiasts can tick off a few species from their life list when flying from Montréal to Sault Ste. Marie.
