Have a whale of a time
Set a course for the sea and book flights from Montréal to St. John’s.
As one of North America’s oldest cities, there’s a past to every attraction in St. John’s. The best things to do in the city each have their own history. From taking a stroll down North America’s oldest commercial street while shopping on Water Street, to hiking up one of the world’s oldest hills to reach Cabot Tower, this Newfoundland city has no shortage of historic attractions.
Although St. John’s is over 500 years old, the city looks great for its age. With gorgeous green spaces like Bannerman Park and Bowring Park, St. John’s is always looking fresh. Outside of the parks, find the best sense of the striking geography the millennia have crafted in this city by heading as far east as you can at Cape Spear. These striking cliffs jut out into the Atlantic Ocean, forming North America’s most easterly point.
Head way back in time and discover St. John’s geological history carved in stone at the Johnson GEO Centre. Enjoy the walk to get there, with the museum sitting atop the 550 million-year-old rocks of Signal Hill. With exhibits on everything from outer space to the ground below the museum, you’ll learn about every era in Earth’s 4.5 billion-year history.
When it comes to Petty Harbour, it’s no fluke to catch a glimpse of whales swimming in its waters. As some of the Atlantic’s biggest inhabitants, you’ll find that fins and tails regularly breach the surface, making this harbour one of St. John’s best spots for whale-watching. Don’t forget to bring a camera on your flight from Montréal to St. John’s to capture shots of these massive mammals.
Find your path to the past in this historic Atlantic city when you book flights from Montréal to St. John’s.
Quidi Vidi Village
Quaint and cultured
Quidi Vidi is a great destination to visit when you book flights from Montréal to St. John’s.
Sitting on the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake, the village looks to the lake for its livelihood. When your flight from Montréal to St. John’s lands, head to this historic fishing village to find plenty of fishing boats bobbing in its harbours. In the summer, sailboats join the fleet for the St. John’s regatta, if weather and wind conditions are favourable.
Quidi Vidi has been catching more than just cod as of late. Craftspeople and artists have been pulled towards the village by the draw of the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation. This building acts as half workshop, half gift shop, so you can watch the artists get creative before picking up something to remember your trip to St. John’s.
When you’re done in the studio, take to the village’s winding streets to enjoy Quidi Vidi’s sights. Direct your gaze between quaint houses, where you’ll catch glimpses of the water, busy with fishermen.
On your travels, keep an eye out for Mallard Cottage. This precarious-looking 18th-century cottage is one of the oldest wooden buildings in North America. Having stood the test of time, Mallard Cottage is now a National Historic Site. While you’re in the cottage pub, get “screeched in”. Lock lips with a (stuffed) cod before chasing it with a shot of screech (a local rum). After that, grab a pint and some pub fare to cleanse your palate before flying back to Montréal.
Quaint and cultured, you’ll find that Quidi Vidi is a real catch when you book flights from Montréal to St. John’s.
