Hunting for history
Book a flight from New York to Thunder Bay for a trip to the scenic shores of Lake Superior.
A dramatic outline against the lake, the Sleeping Giant is one and the same with Thunder Bay. This portion of the Sibley Peninsula rests slightly removed from the city, across the waters. Home to the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park – stay on guard for glimpses of the area’s natural wildlife.
Thunder Bay began as a fur trading settlement, and is now an urban enclave surrounded by woodlands. The Fort William Historical Park is an excellent place to learn the trading routes of the fur trappers and early settlers. Previously an outpost of the North West Company, it once sat at the heart of the fur trade, before becoming a bustling commercial centre in Northern Ontario.
The trading post closed in the 1880’s, and today the site is still active as a living heritage museum. The museum hosts live re-enactments of actors as 19th century fur traders and trappers, leading you through its busy marketplace. In the summer, embark on an excursion across the Kaministiquia River in a replica voyageur canoe. Your adventurous tour guides are packed with tales about life on the river.
Winter brings plenty of things to do in Thunder Bay. At Centennial Park, drift through the snow in a horse-drawn sleigh. The change of seasons will turn many Thunder Bay hiking trails into popular cross-country ski tracks within the park. At 147 acres, you’ll have a field day traversing Centennial Park.
