Ride the waters at the Timmins Wake Park, at Gillies Lake Conservation Area. Even if you’ve never been on a board before, you’ll want to give it a try here. Boats don’t pull you across the lake at the wake park; instead, it’s cable lines suspended overhead doing the work. This is one activity that will keep you going back even with a few wipeouts.
Bask in the sunshine at the beach on Gillies Lake or stroll along the Gillies Lake Promenade circling the water in downtown Timmins. The trail connects to other scenic routes such as the Golden Springs Trail and Lion’s Walk Trails.

Hersey Lake Conservation Area
A sweet escape into Northern Ontario
Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Timmins, the Hersey Lake Conservation Area is a recreational haven. You’ll want to explore this 560-acre park when you fly from New York to Timmins.
The Hersey Conservation Area has plenty of trails for the avid hiker. Getting lost in the forest is the last thing you’ll have to worry about – signs abound at each junction on the Hersey Lake trails. But, you may have to keep an eye out for black bears.
Twice a year, the Timmins Hiking Day is held in the Hersey Lake Conservation Area. You can take part in this community event, which highlights the importance of exercise, and showcases the diversity of Timmins’ wildlife.
For scenic views, traverse the trails to Grosse Point. Or, travel to Jack Pine Lake and climb up to its lookout for a perfect picture of the greenery below.
Dive into the waters of Hersey Lake for a refreshing swim after your hike. Lounge in the warm sunshine on the sandy beach within the park. A picnic is highly recommended. Bring a basket full of goodies, for a well-earned meal beside the waters.
A self-guided tour on the Tamarack Nature Trail will take you on a walk through the park’s wildlife and human history. Follow the markers around Hersey Lake for the story of Timmins’ early Aboriginal settlers, and its change from a marshy bog to lush forest.
Like many other places in Northern Ontario, winter transforms Hersey Lakes’ Trails into fantastic tracks for cross-country skiing. There’s a hardly a season where you can’t enjoy this park on a trip from New York to Timmins.

If you’re driving to Newark Liberty International Airport, you have a few parking options. For short-term parking, lots are located in the Terminal C garage and directly across from Terminals A and B. Rates range from $4 USD for half an hour to $39 USD for a 24-hour maximum. The daily lots in garage P4 have a $34 USD per day maximum rate, and the economy lot has a rate of $18 USD for the first 24 hours, plus an additional $6 USD for each 8-hour period after.
