If you get rained out of the High Line, spend the afternoon indoors in one of New York’s many art galleries. From the contemporary masterpieces in the Museum of Modern Art, to the classic works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York’s collections span almost every era and style of art.
Dating back to the pre-war era, the Grand Central Station Oyster Bar is a taste of old New York. Other than some of the freshest fish in the city, this train terminal also features stunning ceiling murals and impressive architecture. Greenpoint

New York’s quiet side shines in the neighbourhood of Greenpoint.
Even as the city continues to grow, Greenpoint has retained its community feel. For visitors from Sault Ste. Marie, this neighbourhood on the border between Brooklyn and Queens provides a serene retreat during a busy trip.
Streets lined with historic brownstones and mature trees add a little green to Greenpoint. Several self-guided walking tour maps of Greenpoint are available online, to take you past these reminders of Brooklyn’s classic past.
For almost a century, the Polish National Home served as a meeting place for the neighbourhood’s predominately Polish population. Now, in Warsaw at the Polish National Room, the borough’s music scene shines in a vintage 800 person ballroom. Listen to the sounds of Brooklyn’s coolest bands before snacking on the classic Polish blintzes and bigos the National Home has for sale.
Like many Brooklyn neighbourhoods, Greenpoint has an excess of art galleries. Old industrial spaces from the mid-19th century, including a former pencil factory, now display the works of up-and-coming and more established artists on their walls. One of the coolest things to do in Greenpoint is to spend an afternoon gallery hopping between these small exhibition spaces.
Greenpoint’s restaurants take the art of food seriously, combining the best of the neighbourhood’s old and new tastes. Bakers and butchers continue to thrive with classic Polish dishes that are community favourites. This being Brooklyn, you’ll easily find trendier fare, courtesy of the area’s influx of new residents.
After a meal at one of Greenpoint’s restaurants, spend some time outside in one of the neighbourhood’s green spaces. There are no mixed signals about how cool Transmitter Park is. This park provides a sweeping view of Manhattan, on the former grounds of WNYC’s radio towers.
On the border between Greenpoint and Williamsburg, you’ll find the popular McCarren Park. Stay in this park or set out for Williamsburg, either way, McCarren is the perfect green space to round off your trip to Greenpoint.
Williamsburg
Where creativity lives
Brooklyn’s Williamsburg welcomes you with art and parks, during your visit from Sault Ste. Marie.
If you were to visit Williamsburg a decade ago, you would have found designers, DJ’s, and artists as its primary residents. While this neighbourhood has retained its reputation for creativity, Williamsburg has become decidedly more upscale and elegant in its new incarnation. To see for yourself how one of Brooklyn's hippest neighbourhoods has changed, hop on a ferry in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and make the ten-minute trip across the East River.
The creative spirit of Williamsburg continues to thrive in the area’s dense collection of art galleries. Mid-career artists are the focus of the photography, installation, and video art shows in the Front Room Gallery. Anything but middling, this gallery is easy for visitors to find, thanks to the colourfully painted exterior.
Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom has a Brooklyn outpost in the Music Hall of Williamsburg. With connections to a musical Manhattan institution, it’s no surprise the Music Hall of Williamsburg has such good taste.
The McCarren Park Pool was once one of the neighbourhood’s most popular performance venues. With its recent revitalization, the waters have returned to this formerly dilapidated pool, making it one of Williamsburg’s coolest summer hangouts. This larger-than-olympic-sized swimming pool still hosts regular events on its decks, in the spirit of its former summer concerts. McCarren Park itself spans 35 acres, with music performances and film screenings adding more colour to its greenery.
After enjoying the outdoors, grab a pint at one of Williamsburg’s bars. Choose from a vast variety of brews, looking for the hippest and hoppiest offerings. At the Brooklyn Brewery, you can go behind the scenes of this local beer and the history of the neighbourhood that brews it, before raising a glass to your trip from Sault Ste. Marie to New York.

Landing in Newark
There are many options for transportation to downtown New York City from Newark Liberty International Airport.
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is about 27 km / 16 mi from midtown Manhattan.

Ride-hailing apps Uber and Lyft are available from Newark Liberty International Airport. Head outside to follow signs for Ground Transportation and Passenger Pick-Up.
Several NJ Transit buses run from Newark Liberty International Airport. For more information, visit the NJ Transit website.
Take the airport's free Air Train to the Newark Airport Station, to connect to a NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station. Purchase your NJ Transit ticket before boarding the train.
Taxi and car service to Manhattan costs about $75 USD.
Car rental services are available at Station P2 and Station P3 of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Hertz is located in P3. Take the AirTrain to access either of these stations.
The Newark Airport Express shuttle bus provides service from the airport to several stops in New York City. The fare is $16 USD.
Newark Liberty International Airport Parking
If you’re driving to Newark Liberty International Airport, you have a few parking options. For short-term parking, lots are located in the Terminal C garage and directly across from Terminals A and B. Rates range from $4 USD for half an hour to $39 USD for a 24-hour maximum. The daily lots in garage P4 have a $34 USD per day maximum rate, and the economy lot has a rate of $18 USD for the first 24 hours, plus an additional $6 USD for each 8-hour period after.
