The exact origin of Pancake Bay’s name is uncertain, but there are two commonly accepted theories. The first claims that the area was simply named after its sandy shores that appear “flat as a pancake.” The second speculates that the name is related to the diet of voyageurs who frequently travelled to the area for trading purposes.
Locals say that the voyageurs often ate galettes, fried bread made with salt and flour somewhat similar to pancakes. These snacks were practical for eating while travelling. Whichever theory you believe, one thing is certain, modern Pancake Bay’s smooth sand, crystalline waters, and stacks of outdoor activities attract locals and tourists alike.
