Your Freedom Trail to the best of Boston

Flights from Timmins to Boston land you in the heart of American history.

Boston began as a Puritan settlement, before becoming a hotbed for rebellion during the American Revolution. Now, this city has a reputation for higher education, but you don’t need to enroll in a university to experience the best things to do in Boston.

Make the most of Boston’s neighbouring universities, with a visit to their museums. The Harvard Museum of Natural History holds specimens from a vast variety of species, from paleolithic plants to modern mammals. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Museum, science and technology are in the spotlight, with everything from friendly-looking robots to historic holograms on display.

Boston’s best learning is done on the streets, along the Freedom Trail. On this red brick path, you’ll pass by 16 of Boston’s points of interest in America’s journey to Independence. Set off for the Paul Revere House, or get a taste of the past from the food vendors of historic Faneuil Hall Market.

The USS Constitution floats in the Boston Harbour, as a seafaring stop on the Freedom Trail. But Boston’s waterfront has more modern activities too. For one of the best waterfront attractions, head to the New England Aquarium. Everything from sea turtles to octopi will give you a watery welcome, in this innovative and expansive aquarium.

The swan boats of Boston’s Public Garden are made of wood, but these vessels have been the life of the park since 1877. Boston’s oldest park, the Boston Common, is also the oldest city park in the United States. Take some time while you’re in town from Timmins to stroll through this historic urban green space.

Stay on your feet for Boston’s other walking trails. From the Boston Boardwalk, to the Black Heritage Trail, this pedestrian-friendly city welcomes visitors to explore it on foot. Make the most of your visit from Timmins with by ambling along the winding roads where American liberty was won.

Fort Point

Fort Point of interest

After your flight from Timmins lands, set a course for Fort Point, to experience the height of Boston’s fashion, food, and art.

This neighbourhood was named Fort Point in the 1830s, for the canon battery that defended the harbour of Colonial Boston. Fort Point was once the hub of the city, with people and goods coming and going through its docks. After an industrial boom, Fort Point’s factories shut down and the area remained vacant until local artists took over in the 1970s.

The spirit of this artistic influx carries on at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). An extensive permanent collection, combined with workshops for the public makes the ICA the city’s hippest museum. In the evening, live music (by both people and puppets) fills the amphitheatre overlooking the Boston Harbour.

Once you’ve satisfied your appetite for art, Fort Point’s restaurants await. In this neighbourhood, you’ll find bakeries run by Harvard grads and beers brewed by generations of Boston families. If you want to take some tea with your meal, head to the Boston Harbour.

At the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, you can learn more about America’s rebellious streak and how it led to Independence. After a tour led by guides in era appropriate garmnets, buy some tea from the gift shop to sip when you’re back in Timmins.

You can stay by the water with the Boston Harbourwalk, or take a water taxi across to see more of the city.

East Cambridge

Boston’s brainy neighbour

Situated within the borders of Greater Boston, Cambridge is best known for its famous universities. Even if you aren’t enrolled in one of these academic institutions, you can still enjoy this brainy neighbourhood on your trip from Timmins.

With MIT and Harvard University both within the bounds of Cambridge, this area’s reputation for being wicked smart is well earned. Graduates from these intellectual institutions have set up shop in East Cambridge, leading to a rise in sleek offices in the area’s skyline. Acting as innovation centres and incubators for tech companies, these structures have added a modern twist to East Cambridge.

Beyond the bustling technology sector, East Cambridge still maintains its cultural heritage. Portuguese fish markets, bakeries, and barbershops contribute to the enduring community feel of the area.

The campus connects with community members through MIT’s museum. The MIT Museum highlights the university’s current research on the first floor, with exhibits on every topic from video games to air safety. After passing the Bob Marley hologram, continue to the imaginative ventures of the second floor. Holography, robots, and a whirling, pinging series of kinetic sculptures add a touch of fun to this scientifically minded museum.

With an incalculable number of items for sale, the Cambridge Antique Market is almost overwhelming. Explore the seemingly endless collection of toy battleships, buddha figurines, and glass baubles sold by the market’s 150 eclectic vendors.

After marvelling at the area’s market and museum, venture outdoors in the neighbourhood’s parks. Take some time out of your busy trip from Timmins to stroll the waterfronts of Lechmere Canal Park and North Point Park, two of East Cambridge’s shoreline parks.

On the border of East Cambridge and Boston’s West End, you’ll find the Museum of Science. Smarten up in this spectacular science museum, which features over 700 interactive exhibits in its permanent collection, before continuing back to Boston.
