Gateway to Muskoka
Gravenhurst has quite the past. Many of its first visitors were attracted to its lakes, forests and rocky terrain, but fast forward a few years and it quickly became a busy summer hub for seasonal visitors. The Muskoka Wharf was buzzing with thousands of people waiting to be transported by steamship to their summer homes. Now, you can experience a similar ride in the RMS Segwun, which is over 130 years old. Dubbed as the oldest steamship in North America, this historic cruise takes you through Muskoka’s three big lakes.
You’ll also learn about Gravenhurst’s colourful past with its lumbering and sawmills that kept the city booming financially, bringing in more workers and residents. Today, the sawmills are gone but there’s a different kind of buzz on the Muskoka Wharf. Walk down the scenic boardwalk along the same shores as Gravenhurst’s industrial past. Along the way, stop in at a local restaurant or, if you prefer casual, there are a few coffee shops and even a Tea House for you to enjoy.
After your cup of coffee or tea, head to the Muskoka Discovery Centre Museum. Upon your arrival, you’re immediately greeted with a replica steamship outside. Walk in and peruse the vintage wooden boats. This local heritage museum also has an interactive kids’ area so all ages can enjoy.
How about dinner and a show? Head to the Gravenhurst Opera House in downtown Gravenhurst. Located in between boutiques and local restaurants, the Opera House has been entertaining visitors and locals alike for over a century. After dinner, stroll over to the theatre and enjoy an assortment of musical entertainment.
After a hot summer day spent outside, how about a cold one? Gravenhurst is home to SawDust Brewery. Take a tour and try a flight of their IPA, Lager, Ale or Stout.
If you’re ready to get outside, Gravenhurst offers a wide variety of fun things to do. Enjoy its public beaches, perfect for a refreshing dip or settle down under some shade and enjoy a picnic. After your lunch has settled, rent a boat or a jet ski and zip out on the open water, cutting through waves and feeling the fresh spray of the water on your face.
Book a flight to Muskoka with Porter Airlines and experience this gateway city.
